Explore Glendruid

Glendruid Dolmen, also known as Brennanstown Dolmen, is a dolmen or portal tomb located near Carrickmines in Dublin, Ireland

Constructed around 3500 BC, this ancient structure is estimated to be over 5000 years old.

A Portal to the Neolithic Period

During the Neolithic Period, portal tombs like Glendruid Dolmen served as burial sites.

Standing at 11 feet tall, the dolmen's capstone weighs approximately 45 tonnes.

The capstone is supported by two portal stones at the front, two large side slabs, and a back stone at the rear.

Mysteries and Functions

The purpose of the two gutters or channels on the capstone is still debated.

While some suggest they were used to direct rain away from the tomb, others propose that they might have collected blood from sacrifices.

Ancient Engineering

The construction methods employed to create dolmens like Glendruid Dolmen remain a mystery.

It is believed that Neolithic people used rollers and pulleys to position the capstone.

Future Generations

A local heritage group has voiced concerns over plans to build high-rise apartments in close proximity to the dolmen.

The group is advocating for improved public access and preservation of this ancient monument.

As can been seen from our 3d model, Glendruid has also suffered from graffiti damage recently, a reminder of the need to protect these monuments for future generations.
